Web Design

I design websites using the structural markup of xhtml and cascading style sheets (CSS). This technique separates the form of a web page (how it looks) from its content (what it says) and is the key for improving accessibility, creating consistency of presentation across web browsers, optimizing search engine rankings, and decreasing bandwidth usage.

I also use php, flash, javascript, and other scripting languages, as well as database services such as Apache where appropriate. Here are some examples of recent sites I've built (not necessarily all my own aesthetic design, but take a peek at the underlying code):

Data Graphics

Data graphics play an important role in both communicating and representing information. The principles of Edward Tufte facilitate the design of clean, effective graphics that allow users to 'think visually' about data. The use of more advanced software programs such as Adobe Illustrator are used to produced graphics with a minimal amount of visual clutter and a balanced hierarchy.

This example, drawing from Tufte's (2001) The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, attempts to communicate the most information with the fewest number of pixels.
